Safety Policy

The safety of young children is of paramount importance. In order to ensure the safety of both children and adults the following guidelines are used at all times :-

  • Environment

  • All equipment used is safe and suitable for the age group using it.

  • The layout within the room allows children and adults to move safely and freely between the activities.

  • Fire doors must not be obstructed.

  • Outdoor playground will be securely fenced and checked for litter and other   dangers daily.

  • Fire heaters, wires and leads are all adequately guarded.  

  • Regular checking and maintenance is carried out on all the equipment.

  • Dangerous materials (medicines and cleaning materials , etc.) are stored out of reach of the children.

  • Safety gates are used as appropriate.

  • Premises are checked at the beginning and end of each session by Supervision/Management.

  • All children are supervised at all times and are always in sight of an adult.

  • All accidents and injuries which require treatment are recorded in the Accident

  • Book, which the person collecting the child will be asked to sign when we inform them of the incident. 

  • In the event of a serious accident requiring more specialist help, an ambulance will be summoned and the parent/carer/next of kin informed.

  • There will be safe surfaces beneath, and around all climbing equipment and such activities will be appropriately supervised.

  • Smoking and vaping is not prohibited on the school site.

  • Regular fire drills are carried out each half term.

  • Fire extinguishers are checked by local authority and staff trained in this area

  • Children are not allowed into the kitchen unless supervised.

  • Hot drinks will remain in the kitchen at all times.

  • children will be with in sight of staff while eating

  • Children and adults are registered (See also Arrival Policy) on arrival, ensuring an accurate roll call in the event of any emergency.

  • A fully stocked First Aid box is available from a clearly marked cupboard.

  • When children are on the premises at least two adults are present.

  • On outings the adult to child ratio will be 1:2.

  • If a group goes out, the on-site ratio will be maintained.

  • Any sleeping child is checked regularly.

  • No child may leave the pre-school unaccompanied (See also Home time Policy)

  • All staff will gain, within their first year of employment, a certificate in First Aid if they do not already hold one.
